to mr daniel sheridan and build a better school

i am very happy to have learned trough a worldchanging article about your energee-saw project.

i wish you very much success in scaling up and finding perhaps strategic partners like the olpc ( one laptop per child ) project for mutual growth

i believe that the regions of the world where the general income is very low and infrastructure is poor, that in this regions a focus more on self guided learning and pupil empowering could be more successful than a traditional teacher and schoolbooks strategy.

since some time i am trying to sketch out rudimentarily a kind of portable system what goes beyond a laptop.

i envision two tools enabling to both go into wildlife and being connected over the internet with all desired databases website servers and individual contacts while actually being surrounded by trees lakes rivers and animals

the first is a combination of two electronic ink displays
mounted on a headworn frame ( my favorite tech for this is the one from the Pixel Qi company also because of mary lou jepsen engagement for the one laptop per child project )
such an easy on the eyes electronic ink datagoggles/dataglasses
would relieve the user from constantly having to bend the head down to watch a smartphone/ hanheld device screen
additionaly giving the display the properties of being adjustably transparent like in the research of fraunhofer institute or with a headmounted camera and augmented reality software would result in uninterrupted immersion into the surrounding with at the same time retrieving and sending information from and to every desired destination

to further free the mobile user from his/ her hands being “glued” to the keyboard or the touchscreen, i was thinking of every finger and wrist and ellbow etc being “tagged” with a RFID stripe so that one could for example stand near a tree and type with the fingers lightly on the trunk
poems or botanical observations likewise
each RFID stripe would be recognised by the pocket processor device and the typing process being displayed on the head unit

three recent research projects might help achieve this
advanced input methods

skin input

muscle sensing

project natal

the second tool i see is a transportable virtual reality dome
allowing the user to set it up anywhere in nature
it consists of a plastic material with piezoelectric energy harvesting layers inside and strings ropes and other pull push or rotate handles so one can step inside the dome and play movement games ( liane climbing gliding or knitting leaves into a jungle home ) what movements then generates the electrical energy to feed the many projectors motion caption cameras used to display the users movement into the inside the dome surface projected scenery

both ideas are far from being concepted professionally
and could need some more research and url of existing developments could being linked together

i did several mostly spontaneous attempts of describing the two above ideas and posted them at my blog at

http://mayloveheal.wordpress.com

also there are concepts being presented in the gadgets blog where artists envision motion energy being generated trough portable play and fitness tools

-chukka kinetik mp3 player what works like the prayerbeads being played with one hand

-e-rope, a skipping rope what recharges batteries in the handles

- energy pods, kinetic exercise juggling balls charges batteries

- a spring in the heel of the schoe

- a up and down moving energy storing device built in the backpack

i think that the time is ripe for these kind of ultraportable information and communication and energy autonomous solutions being presented both for the gadget mad industrial society as well as for a decentral energy generation in not so whealty areas of the world

the demand is certainly here and there are many scientific studies being done
on how virtual reality can be beneficial for both learning as well as for therapeutic use

just in these days these news come out what takes vr onto a next level:

Virtual reality you can reach out and touch
Jul 1, 2010 10:34
A team from nine European universities and research institutes in developing technology to make VR objects and characters touchable, using haptic and multi-modal interfaces, new signal processing techniques, and generation of VR objects in real time. why do i write you all this:

i admire the name of your company
playmadeenergy
perhaps you find time and interest to somehow sketch out a combination of all the various concepts and allready existing mobile kinetic chargers and would like to bring together the various designers and producers in a kind of cooperative alliance so that consumers of all financial levels may find a kind of interlocking system for both kinetic chargers as well as mobile virtual reality devices

there is much more i collected during the last months

unfortunatly i did not put it in good order so it would take some effort on my side, but i would love to do that if i knew someone like you would appreciate and could use this sorting

i would be thankfull for an eventual feedback of yours, perhaps you would like to forward this email to a person who has also an interest in these fields

wishing you very much success with the e-saw

andreas buechel

p.s. i did write an utopian scifi story with also some visionairy ideas in it about future learning environments
